Lectures, students, family members and friends gathered in the North-Campus Auditorium yesterday to honour the memory of a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student who was brutally murdered. Siviwe ‘Svij’ Ntizi, a B Com. honours student at NMMU was stabbed to death in the notorious township of Motherwell last Saturday.
He was out with his two friends Sivuyile and Monwabisi when two men approached them asking if they were familiar with the township. When the friends gave a negative answer, the two men pulled out their firearms and asked for their clothes and cellphones. In fear they all ran in different directions but unfortunately Siviwe was captured, stripped off his clothes and slaughtered to death. A case has been opened against Siviwe’s murderers and investigations are still underway.
Many students are shocked by Siviwe’s death as he was an example of a success story. All the way from the Transkei he had graduated in record time and was accepted for his honours programme. Being the only child from a single parent one can only imagine the pain his mother is enduring. His family was not available for comments as his body has not been laid to rest yet but friends were willing to share stories about him. Siviwe’s former House Committee at Unitas Residence describes him as a bubbly individual, “Svij was the type of person that would make sure he knew everyone in the flat and his death came as a shock to me” said Melikhaya Jack.
Funeral arrangements for students were made provisionally with a R80 fee for transportation. Siviwe will be finally laid to rest in Engcobo, Transkei tomorrow 17/09 although his murderers are roaming the streets. This is yet another loss to the brutal killings of society.
