Last night I had the honour of attending William Gumede’s book launch and being in the presence of academics and critical thinkers. Since I have never been to a conversational book launch I was eager to see how the event would be carried out. Alongside Gumede was Political Analyst and writer Mcebisi Ndletyana. The two guest speakers spoke about how Marikana was a result of an incompetent political economy (which also raised an issue about wealth distribution) they also touched on the lack of development within the ANC governance and the upcoming Mangaung conference. I enjoyed a joke made by Ndletyana about the decline of vision within the ANC; I still believe that the removal of Thabo Mbeki cost our country greatly. It was truly amazing to see students at the event (although I was a bit displeased with the fact that the majority of the students were males). We really need to step up as the youth to shape our nation-we can’t let our voices die out in silence. Please do get a copy of Gumede’s book titled Restless Nation: Making Sense of Troubled Times.
